Classic Tour raises further funds for Cornwall Hospices
The annual Classic Tour of Cornwall took place on Sunday 28th June and featured
a 120 mile route mostly in the far south west of the county. From the
traditional start venue at Penhale, Fraddon, the route initially took
competitors through Newlyn East and the Mithian areas to a coffee halt on the
outskirts of Redruth.
The latter part of the morning run went via Carharrack and Stithians Resevoir to
the lunch break at Porthleven Harbour.
The initial part of the afternoon took competitors through Goldsithey Cross and
Townshend to a passage control near Marazion and then through Newlyn via the
Lamorna and Porthcurno areas to the final passage check at Lands End. The return
route to the finish at Tregenna Castle Hotel used the winding coastal road from
St Just to St. Ives.
Presenting the many awards at the finish, Chief Executive, Paul Brinsley, said
how pleased he was that the Tour of Cornwall had stayed loyal to Cornwall
Hospice Care as these were particularly difficult times for the Hospices and
they were constantly having to make difficult decisions to cover costs. To date
they had managed to avoid a cut back in their services but this was becoming an
increasingly difficult task.
A total of almost 40 cars took part in this year’s event, numbers depleted
slightly due to absence of a number of regulars who were away at a an invitation
Jaguar anniversary event on the Isle of Wight. Run by a small band of volunteers
from Newquay Auto Club, the event, nevertheless raised a further £1650 for
Cornwall Hospice Care bringing the combined total raised to date to well over
£100,000 from this event and the main Tour of Cornwall special stage rally which
normally takes place in April each year.

The 2008 event was particularly well received and we hope that you will again have an enjoyable day this year albeit in a different part of the county. Our four loyal sponsors who have yet again agreed to carry their support for the Classic Tour into a fifth successive year. We are most grateful to them.
At the suggestion of one of our regular entrants, we have decided, for the first time, to abandon a fixed entry fee this year. Instead you are invited to make a donation appropriate to what you which or are able to give by way of an entry fee. This will of course continue to include morning coffee at the prescribed mid-morning halt and the traditional cream tea at the finish venue. As our regular entrants will know, the event is run entirely on a voluntary basis by the Newquay Auto Club committee members and all proceeds, other than direct costs, are donated to Cornish Hospice Care, so you can be assured that any additional donation you do make will add to the total sum raised.
If you are interested in entering the event, perhaps for the first time, the route will, as usual, be 100- 115 miles in total, on good roads, all taken at a leisurely pace with generous coffee and lunch breaks.
An easy to follow Road Book is supplied which is designed to keep even the inexperienced navigator on the correct route rather than get you lost!
There is also a generous array of perpetual trophies for various classes of classic car. We continue to take a liberal view of what constitutes a true "classic" and are unlikely to refuse your entry (as many will know previous Tours have included "modern" Morgans, Mercedes, Lotus 7's as well as some late model kit cars). Above all, it is a very friendly and enjoyable day for all with the added knowledge that you are at the same time helping to benefit a most worthwhile cause.
We look forward to receiving your entry!
