Welcome to the Newquay Auto Club website.
Welcome to the Newquay Auto Club website.
Our home base is a little "village" in Cornwall called Newquay which is probably
more familiar to holidaymakers and surfers than those interested in motor sport!
Our aim is to promote motor sport throughout Cornwall and the South West.
Newquay Auto Club was born in 1914 with the name "Newquay Motorcycle and Light
Car Club." It can claim to be the first car club in the West Country and apart
from the war years has remained active to the present day.
In 1954 the Club changed its name to the more suited Newquay Motor Club, as the
motor cycles had long gone. Then another name change occurred in 1974 when, like
many other clubs, it incorporated and became the present "Newquay Auto Club
Ltd."
If you have heard of Newquay Auto Club, you will have heard of our St Eval
Sprint meetings. At least two of the meetings at St. Eval are rounds of the
Association of South Western Motor Clubs Sprint Championship and all five events
are rounds of the Club’s St. Eval Sprint Championship and Cornish Speed
Championship. Entry to the St Eval championship is automatic (and free!) to all
Newquay Auto Club members - surely a good enough reason alone for joining the
Club?
Newquay Auto Club is the driving force behind the Cornish Speed Championship
launched in 2002 in conjunction with the three other motor clubs promoting speed
events in the County. The Championship continues to be extremely popular with
both competitors and spectators and has again attracted in excess of fifty
entries this year.
For several years now the Club has organised the Classic Tour of Cornwall and
like the main “Tour” event held annually (see below), the proceeds go to Mount
Edgcumbe Hospice. In the past five years the Club has donated over £8000 to the
Hospice funds from successive Classic events. For details of this year’s event,
follow the link in the margin of this page.
Our Club is also pleased to be one of the three founder clubs who organize the
Tour of Cornwall Rally. This charity event in the past 14 years has become
probably the major motor sport events held in the south west, with donations to
Mount Edgcumbe Hospice now over the £90,000 mark.
We are extremely proud of the fact that the combined now exceeds the £100,000
mark making the two “Tour of Cornwall events the Hospice’s largest single
benefactor by some margin.
As well as the Tour of Cornwall Rally, we also co-promote Single Venue Stage
Rallies with other clubs, principally Truro and District Motor Club. For details
of these events please follow the link to the TDMC site via the link in the
margin of this page.
One important event held in early December each year is Newquay Auto Club's
Annual Dinner and Awards Evening, arguably the best supported Motor Club social
events on the South West calendar. continued popularity is due in no small
measure to the many hours of hard work contributed by Ernie & Esme' Moyse. Esme
and her assistant, Ernie, have been responsible for sorting awards, engraving
and making sure the evening runs like clockwork since Charlton Heston drove a
chariot for Ben Hur! (entered in the Sports Libre class!)
If you would like to know more about the club and its activities, please follow
the links on this page or just click on the Committee page and contact anyone of
the Officials by telephone or email. Alternatively just give Ernie a ring on
